My Dressing Table and Makeup Collection
My dressing table is the pride and joy of my room. Granted, it's not where I spend most of my time (that would be my bed!), but it's the part that makes me the happiest as I just love seeing all the beautiful products I own together and all neatly organised. It's the little things in life! When I was living at home in Perth, I never really had a space I loved to store my makeup (just an acrylic set of drawers in a corner of the floor of my bedroom) and now, after six years of blogging, I'm finally ready to show you my full makeup collection! Although I've been living in my Melbourne apartment for over two years now, it was the perfectionist in me that didn't allow myself to show you all earlier. In a way though, I'm glad I waited because as it's been through so many declutters, I now feel like it's the truest representation of me and my personal style when it comes to makeup. I know everybody loves a good makeup collection, so grab yourself a cup of tea and enjoy!
My dressing table needs no introduction. As you all know, it's the Malm Dressing Table from IKEA, and although it's ubiquitous and nothing unique, it's an amazing, affordable piece of furniture that looks good and serves its purpose well. It's white, sleek and minimal, which means it goes with the interior aesthetic I enjoy and it also perfectly houses all my makeup without the need for extra storage. I always find it interesting to see how everyone styles theirs too!
Starting on the left hand side, I have a silver double-sided mirror from Myer, then my Muji Acrylic Box 2 Drawers (you can read an old post about them here), which house some of my most reached for products, as well as my MAC eyeshadow palettes that are a bit too cumbersome to store anywhere else. On top of that, sits an acrylic lipstick container from eBay full of my MAC lipsticks. I've gotten rid of quite a few of them over the last couple of months, so I may buy a smaller one at some point as it looks a little silly with all those empty spots at the back! We then have my makeup brushes; my face brushes are kept in a Skurar Plant Pot from IKEA and yes, it's another blogger cliché, but it's the perfect size! My face brushes are comprised of MAC, Real Techniques and Hakuhodo, as well as the Charlotte Tilbury Powder & Sculpt Brush. Beside the pot also sits my MAC 182 Buffer Brush. I use a silver mercurised tealight holder from Bed Bath N' Table to house my eye makeup brushes (my NARS Yachiyo Kabuki Brush, which I use for contouring is in here though because it's too short for the IKEA plant pot); my favourite brand being MAC, though there's one or two from others like Real Techniques, Hakuhodo, Urban Decay (from my Naked Palettes) and Makeup Weapons. In the Diptyque candle jar, I keep my Zoeva brushes from the Rose Golden Luxury Set as I like how pretty they look all together.
Getting into the centre of my dressing table, my rose quartz stone from the Paddington Markets in Sydney serves as a beautiful decorative piece, then I have a couple more recycled Diptyque candle jars, which I keep cotton pads and cotton buds in. My Guerlain Météorites Perles are so pretty, I like to keep them on top of my dressing table as decor too and next to it, is a glass jar full of hair ties and bobby pins. My friend, Holly, got me this for my birthday a few years ago. To the right, I have more products to serve as decor; my Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense (limited edition), Dior Créme de Rose and the YSL Touche Éclat Blur Perfector. My friend, Jennifer, gifted me the Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Candle (my favourite Jo Malone scent!) for my birthday last year and the crystal flower vase was handed down to me from my mum. She received it for her 21st birthday and when she saw how much I loved it, my mum said I could have it when I moved to Melbourne. It definitely holds a lot of sentimental value to me and it's always filled with flowers whenever I can afford it!
I get a lot of questions asked about my mirror. I'd always known I wanted a French, ornate-style mirror and this one was a totally random find when I wasn't even looking! It's from a shop called Thingz in Perth. Below my dressing table, I store my nail polishes in the Original Nail Polish Tower from Makeup Box Shop (I'll eventually do a collection post on them too) on the left hand side, and to the right, are all my hair products and tools in a white whicker basket from eBay. Also from eBay is my dressing table stool, which unlike my mirror, I hunted high and low for! It goes perfectly with my dressing table and the grey velvet upholstery ties in really nicely with my bedroom colour theme.
Now onto the actual makeup! In the drawer of my dressing table, I separate and categorise my makeup using the Muji PP Vanity Cases. It's part organised in the order of how I'd typically apply my makeup, part in a way in which it all fit nicely together. I'll now take you through each and every product I own!
In the far back (I try not to keep too much there as it's a little harder to reach) behind my foundations, are my primers. I mostly prefer hydrating and illuminating primers since my skin is a little on the dehydrated side, and the Marc Jacobs Invisible Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer and Chanel Le Blanc de Chanel Multi-Use Illuminating Base are perfect for just that. I love the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer for when I'm going out and the aforementioned YSL Touche Éclat Blur Perfector is lovely for minimising pores.
Foundations and tinted moisturisers
NARS Sheer Glow Foundation is my favourite and will always be found in my Muji drawers, but at the moment, I've also got my NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser in there too when I want a lighter coverage base. In my dressing table drawer are the rest; Laura Mercier Silk Crème Moisturising Photo Edition Foundation, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation, Dior Diorskin Nude BB Creme and Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Foundation. In terms of light, medium and full coverage products, I've got all my bases covered (no pun intended!) and haven't felt the need to try anything new for quite a while.
I'm working on using up both my MAC Studio Finish Concealer and Marc Jacobs Remedy Concealer Pen, so they're kept in my Muji drawers for easy reach. My Glossier Stretch Concealer is also in there too as I've been enjoying using it recently. In my dressing table drawer, I have my Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer and YSL Touche Éclat in the same section as my foundations and tinted moisturisers. In the far back, I have two unopened ones; NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and a backup my favourite full coverage concealer, MAC Studio Finish. I'll open both of these up once my current pot of Studio Finish is done.
I'm not a big powder person; the three that I own are MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light and as I mentioned earlier, the Guerlain Météorites Perles in Teint Rosé. The Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder SPF 15 is on my wishlist, but I'm in no rush to go out and buy it.
I've decluttered so many of my blushes recently, but as I was only reaching for the same ones over and over, there was just no point in keeping anything else around. In my blush container, I mostly have a whole bunch of nude-y brown pinks because they're my favourite. They include: Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Baby Love, MAC Blush Powders in Cubic (discontinued), The Perfect Cheek (limited edition) and Prism, NARS Blush in Douceur (discontinued), Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure. I love peachy cheeks occasionally too, the two that I own being MAC's Powder Blush in Margin and the NARS Blush in Madly.
I have one cream blush, which is the Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Blushed Rose and as they're too big to fit in my main blush container, I keep my Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Swish & Pop Blusher in First Love and MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in Stereo Rose (limited edition) in with my highlighters.
Whether it's powder, cream or liquid, I love a good highlighter. My powder highlighters include the Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Powder in Candlelight, MAC Mineralise Skinfinishes in Soft & Gentle and Lightscapade, and the Topshop Highlighter in Crescent Moon (discontinued). My two cream ones are the Glossier Haloscope in Quartz and Benefit Watt's Up!, then I have three liquids; Benefit High Beam and my BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquids in Pearl and Opal. I mostly use the Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquids mixed in with primer, but they fit better and still make sense being together with my highlighters.
I'm very subtle with my bronzer and contour, so these five products here are enough to last me a lifetime! I have my Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow, Too Faced Soul Mates Blushing Bronzer in Ross & Rachel (I could NOT resist a product named after my favourite TV couple and it's a beautiful bronzer too! It was limited edition though), Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Luminous Bronze Light, Tom Ford Bronzing Powder in Terra and finally, my Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder in Medium.
Starting with my non-tinted lip balms, I have the Glossier Flavoured Balm Dotcoms in Coconut and Rose (Rose is meant to be tinted, but it's barely detectable), Lucas' Papaw Ointment, and the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. As I mentioned, the Dior Crème de Rose sits upon my dressing table and I also have the Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15 in my Muji drawers. My tinted lip balms include the Korres Lip Butters in Jasmine and Wild Rose (I like to wear Wild Rose underneath a red/vampy lip), Clarins Instant Light Lip Balm Perfector in Rosewood, Dior Addict Lip Glow and my favourite, the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Sugar Honey.
Along with my lip balms, I also have one lip gloss, the Dior Dior Addict Lip Maximiser High Volume Lip Plumper as well as my lip scrub, the Mecca Cosmetica Kissable Lips Smoothing Lip Exfoliant.
Lipsticks and lip liners
I'll start off with my MAC Lipsticks as they're what I own the most of. I've arranged them by colour going lightest to darkest (nudes, pinks and then reds), so even though you can't tell what they are just by looking at the bullet, I still have a rough idea of where each one has been placed! My MAC Lipsticks are: Jubilee, Velvet Teddy, Spirit, Whirl, Faux, Mehr, Twig, Ruby Woo, Russian Red, Viva Glam I, Diva and Dark Side.
Continuing on with the MAC lipsticks, I have the Mattene Lipstick in Unknown Pleasures (love the colour and also the album it's named after! It was limited edition), and the Liptensity Lipstick in Smoked Almond too. NARS would have to be my second favourite lip product brand and from them I own three Velvet Matte Lip Pencils in the shades Dolce Vita, Cruella and Walkyrie, as well as the Pure Matte Lipstick in Tonkin. The two Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks I own are the K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Penelope Pink and Matte Revolution Lipstick in Very Victoria, while the other two you see in my drawer are the Tom Ford Ultra-Rich Lip Colour in Revolve Around Me and Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy. You'll notice I don't own any liquid lipsticks, I just can't stand how drying they are!
My lip liners are mostly comprised of MAC and from them, I own five Lip Pencils in the shades Subculture, Soar, Whirl, Ruby Woo and Beet. The Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheats are amazing too; I have Pillow Talk and Iconic Nude.
I feel like I don't own as many eyeshadow palettes compared to most other bloggers, but I love it that way. It's something I'm super picky with and I've never been a fan of cheek palettes either. You literally only use one or two shades from them and it's such a huge waste to me! Anyway, as I mentioned, I keep my two MAC Eye Shadow Custom Palettes x15 as well as my MAC Eye Shadow Custom Palette x2 in my Muji drawers (you cans see an overview of them here), then I own five pre-made ones; the Tarte Tartelette In Bloom Amazonian Clay Palette, Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Palette, Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette, Urban Decay Naked2 Eyeshadow Palette and then there's my Lorac Pro Palette, which was so generously handed down to me from Jess when she decided to declutter it.
I try to keep my single eyeshadows to a minimum just because it's easier to use a palette as opposed to thinking about how to create a look with a single eyeshadow and something else. My single eyeshadows are mostly made up of cream eyeshadows, they include three MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots in Groundwork, Constructivist and Quite Natural, a mini Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Rose Gold (another decluttered gift from Jess!) and the most beautiful of them all, the By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon.
Shockingly, I only own two powders! The Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Diamond Dog and the Burberry Wet & Dry Silk Shadow in Midnight Brown. I love a bit of glitter on special occasions too and when I want something super sparkly and fun, I turn to my MAC Glitters in Reflects Pearl and Reflects Antique Gold (discontinued).
With dehydrated skin, I've become a bit obsessed with facial mists! I have a couple more that I keep in the bathroom with my skincare, but the ones residing at my dressing table are the aforementioned Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense on top, then the Chanel Hydra Beauty Essence Mist, Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist and MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ inside.
Miscellaneous eye products/tools
I never understand why people own a whole bunch of eyeliners and mascaras. Eyeliners take so long to get through and with such a short shelf life, there's no point in having any more than two mascaras open at a time! In my eye products/tools container, I have three eyeliners; the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon Eyeliner in Blacquer (I have the mini size, which I got for my birthday from Sephora), which is obviously a black and I use that on my upper lashline and tightline. I also have a white one for my waterline, MAC's Eye Kohl in Fascinating, as well as the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper for when I want a cat eye. I have two eye primers; Too Faced Shadow Insurance and the NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, which I will open once Shadow Insurance has run out. Shadow Insurance is irritatingly the product that keeps on giving and I've desperately been trying to use it up for a year! I feel like I've come so far, I can't give up now though!
I also have my tools; the Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezers, Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers and my NARS Pencil Sharpener. In mascaras, I have the IT Cosmetics Tightline Full Length Black Mascara Primer (I would not repurchase this, I prefer the Dior Diorshow Maximiser 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer as a mascara primer) and in my Muji drawers for easy reach, my one true love, the Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara. I also keep my eyebrow products in my Muji drawers; Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil, Anastasia Brow Wiz and MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set.
I don't use my Beautyblender every time I do my makeup, so when it's not in use, I keep it near my makeup tools (I kept the container for travel and to rest my Beautyblender on when it's drying). I keep my brush cleaning supplies in my dressing table drawer too; I have MAC's Brush Cleanser for spot cleaning and the Beautyblender Solid Makeup Cleanser for deep cleaning. Other miscellaneous things at my dressing table are an empty MAC Eye Shadow Custom Palette x4 for travelling (the x15 palettes are too big!), a packet of Muji Pocket Tissues for wiping down grubby products and fingers, as well as my pill in my top Muji drawer so that I remember to take it everyday. I didn't photograph it because it's not pretty (lol), but that is everything I keep at my dressing table!
I'm really, really happy with my little (or not so) makeup set up. Everything is easy to see and reach, which means no product is being forgotten about and I love not having products stacked on top of each other too. Over the past few months, I've really worked on refining and curating my collection, and it's so nice to be able to say that I love and use everything I own, and not, "I like this, but I never wear it!". Each and every product you see has its place and its value here. I never want to own more makeup than I can fit in my dressing table (here's an old Instagram photo from when I first got my Malm - look at ALL those blushes! I don't even remember what half of them were!) just because I know this is already more than enough for one person, but for a beauty blogger, I'd say it's still a reasonably modest amount! You can be the judge of that though! If you're wondering where my perfumes are kept, they're stored on a shelf inside my wardrobe as I prefer to keep them away from light. If there's any product you'd like me to talk about on my blog that I haven't already or if you have any questions that I may not have answered in this already lengthy, descriptive post, please let me know!
