In the Nude: Lips
To say the revival of the nude lip in the past year or so has been huge is an understatement. Where I once struggled to find shades that complemented my medium skin tone (it did not help that back when I first got into beauty, I took my recommendations off pale blonde YouTubers; MAC's Myth, anyone?), there is now an endless variation of nude to suit all complexions. From the my-lips-but-better nudes, the pinky nudes and even the brown shades, the nude lip requires minimal effort and pairs perfectly with any kind of makeup look, therefore making them my go-to shades to reach for on an everyday basis. Every brand seems to have jumped on board the nude lip bandwagon, much to my delight, and although my feelings towards the Kardashians are very much indifferent, I guess in a way, I do have Kylie Jenner to thank. A trend that was last popular during the '90s, Kylie Jenner's makeup has seen the resurgence of the nude lip once more and in celebration of my love of all shades nude, this post is the first instalment out of three in my 'In the Nude' series. Cheeks and nails will follow soon, but for now, here's my take on nude lip colours.
The 'My Lips But Better' Nude
As I mentioned above, I have a medium complexion that is yellow-toned; A MAC NC30 for colour reference. I'm no pale white girl like the majority of YouTubers and bloggers I follow, therefore, what most may consider brown nudes, are actually my-lips-but-better shades on me. MAC's Lipstick in Jubilee is the lightest of the lot and as a lustre finish, also the sheerest. Described as a "naked beigey-pink", Jubilee is one of those colours you can whack on without a mirror and if I ever want to increase its longevity or change the colour tone, I apply a lip pencil underneath. If I had to pick my favourite nude lip colour of all time, it would go to MAC's Lipstick in Velvet Teddy. A "deep-tone beige", it's the my-lips-but-better shade that makes me feel the most me, and from pale, medium and dark complexions, Velvet Teddy is a nude shade for everyone. It's simply love. When I first got my hands on the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Very Victoria, I was expecting a deep brown nude like the swatches I saw on Google Images, but in reality, it's actually very close to my natural lip colour. Super comfortable on the lips, it doesn't feel like a matte lipstick at all (Temptalia describes it as a semi-matte and I would too) and is the most beautiful warm, rosy brown shade. The product that's closest to my natural lip colour is MAC's Lip Pencil in Subculture. So much so, when I apply it, sometimes I can't even tell where Subculture begins and my natural lip colour ends! I guess it seems kind of redundant to own a product so alike my lips, but I feel as though this "underground pink" shade enhances my natural colouring and I love it for that.
The Pinky Nude
I feel like most pinky nudes suit paler complexions, though I have found a select few that complement my skin tone. Chanel's Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy is a cult classic within the brand and providing a beautiful sheer wash of colour to the lips, it has the ability to come up more of a my-lips-but-better shade depending on your skin tone. On me, it's a subtle pinky nude with the slightest hint of shimmer and though I'm not usually one for shimmery lip products, it's barely detectable and the shine makes your lips look fresh and plump. I discovered the Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Penelope Pink through my good friend, Jennifer, who applied it on me for a makeup look she created. It's more on the pale side of pink, but never looks like "concealer lips" and instead, is the perfect '60s kind of nude. The NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Tonkin borderlines on being both straight up pink and my-lips-but-better on me. Described as a "cinnamon plum", it would probably be more mauve-brown on lighter skin tones and is one I think would look universally flattering no matter what colouring you are. The Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk is my most used lip pencil ever and though it probably veers more neutral pink than nude, I can wear this under any of my nude lipsticks and it will always look good. Pro tip: Pillow Talk and Velvet Teddy are a match made in Heaven.
The Brown Nude
When it comes to brown nudes, I don't like anything too brown as I feel as though they can wash out my complexion a little. Laura Mercier's Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Milky Way is probably as brown as I'll go and I think I can pull it off as it's more on the creamy nude side, as opposed to a straight up brown. This is one I like to pair with a more pinky lip liner sometimes too. Of all my brown nude lip colours, MAC's Lipstick in Spirit is probably my favourite. Described as a "muted pinky-beige brown", it's my perfect '90s nude colour and honestly, I feel like I've gone back in time whenever I wear this one! MAC's Whirl is perhaps one of the most coveted nude lip colours, so much so, the original lip pencil was made into a lipstick just last year. It's a "dirty rose" shade with brown undertones and one I can see looking beautiful on all skin tones. The Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Iconic Nude is a lovely beige-brown colour that pairs well with so many of my nude lipsticks, but particularly Very Victoria. The combination of the two creates the most stunning brown nude lip and the slight pink undertones make it more flattering on my complexion. The newest addition to my nude lip collection is the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Bow N Arrow. Constantly sold out in Sephora, this is another sought-after lip product, which is described as a "fawn nude". On me, it pulls up a soft beige-brown with pink undertones that's not all that dissimilar from my natural lip colour, though perhaps a couple of shades darker and definitely more cool-toned. It's a stunning shade on both pale and medium skin tones, possibly a bit too light for those that are darker, but in saying that, you could pair it with a dark lip liner to suit you better. Also, just wear whatever the hell you want.
The Nude Lip Balm
These nude lip balms could also fall into the my-lips-but-better category, but I decided to create one of its own because they are worthy of it. Whenever I'm in a rush getting ready for work and don't have time to fuss over lipstick, I'll always reach for a lip balm, and I love the fact that these are a 2-in-1 lip balm and lip colour. The Clarins Instant Light Lip Balm Perfector in Rosewood is a sheer pinky nude shade and although it can be hard to detect any colour at all, this definitely enhances my natural lip colour. I'm not too big a fan of gloss either, but there's something about a bit of shine on the lips that makes you look more fresh and awake, and I love that the Lip Balm Perfectors provides this for me without being over the top glossy. When it comes to tinted lip balms, the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments are in a league of their own. Comfortable, hydrating and beautifully pigmented, I have the shade Sugar Honey and I feel like this colour was made just for me because it suits my lips so damn well. It's a "bold warm nude" and the one I'd call my perfect fuss-free lip product. In the 2.5 seconds it takes to apply this, my makeup looks polished and complete, and I am ready to take the day on!
