Some time ago, I was tagged by the lovely Cindy of Cindyue to do The AM & PM Routine Tag. I've never been one to do a lot of tags because there haven't been many that have taken my interest, but I really loved this one because it was something a little more than simply writing about my favourite lipstick and blush (MAC's Lipstick in Ruby Woo and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure - no surprises there!). The AM & PM Routine Tag was created by Celina of The Celution and as we all have such diverse routines and schedules here, I thought it'd be fun to share with you what I get up to on a day-to-day basis.
1. What is your morning beauty routine?
After pressing the snooze button on my phone a few hundred times, I eventually get up and head straight for the bathroom to brush my teeth and get into my morning skincare routine. I'm not a morning person at all, so I like to keep things pretty simple in the AM. On a good day, I'll cleanse, tone, use a serum, moisturise and apply sunscreen, but if I'm in a rush or feeling lazy, I'll skip cleanser and just wash my face with water. If I'm feeling really lazy, moisturiser and sunscreen will be the only products to follow that! I then get dressed, apply my deodorant, a spritz of perfume, and then go on to do my makeup. After that, I do my hair, which basically just consists of brushing my fringe with a round brush and running my fingers through the lengths. I don't brush my hair because it makes it frizzy and if it's freshly washed, I'll already have it blow dried and straightened the night before. I don't like waking up any earlier than I need to!
2. What's for breakfast?
I go through phases with what I like to eat for breakfast and come the colder months, I get really into crumpets and porridge. At the moment, I'm all about the crumpets. I'll have two each morning and I love that they keep me full right up until lunchtime. I'll either have butter and Vegemite or butter and creamed honey on them and it's simply delicious! Perhaps not as healthy or pretty looking as açaí bowls, but oh well! I always have a jasmine green tea with my breakfast too as I simply cannot live without the stuff.
3. Coffee or tea?
It's tea all the way for me! I don't like the taste of coffee and I'm actually kind of glad because I'd hate to have to rely on coffee to get me through each day. I know I'd be one of those people who'd have to have milk and a load of sugar to actually enjoy it, so it seems like both a very expensive and unhealthy habit to have! Buying beauty products is my expensive habit, I don't need another one!
I don't know whether the caffeine in tea actually gives me energy; I feel like I enjoy the warmth (even in summer) and taste of it more so than anything else. I love that it's soothing, calming and refreshing all at the same time and there's really not a type of tea I don't enjoy. Having said that, jasmine green tea is my go-to morning tea and come the afternoon, I love a cup of English Breakfast. If I'm at work or out and about, I'll occasionally treat myself to a chai latte, though I'm definitely no Starbucks regular. I'm happy with my basic supermarket teabags!
4. How long does it take to get out the door?
I'm usually out the door within 45 minutes from waking up. I can be ready in about 30 minutes, but I'm learning to give myself enough time in the mornings because it's not a nice start to the day feeling rushed and stressed. I guess 45 minutes sounds like a long time, but as I mentioned, I'm not a morning person, so I tend to move at a slower pace before I'm fully functioning for the day!
5. What is your go-to makeup look on a fuss-free morning?
It takes me about 15 to 20 minutes to do my everyday makeup routine for work and I'll do so each morning as I'm eating breakfast and sipping on my tea. I don't need primer, but as I'm trying to use up my Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer, this is the first step in my makeup routine. I then apply my favourite everyday foundation, NARS Sheer Glow, and conceal with MAC's Studio Finish. If I have the time or I'm looking particularly tired, I'll brighten my complexion with the YSL Touche Éclat before powdering with MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural. My favourite brow products to use in the mornings are either the MAC Eyeshadow in Brun with a Real Techniques Brow Brush or the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil as they're the quickest to apply, and I'll then finish them off with the Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel. On a fuss-free morning, I don't wear eyeshadow or eyeliner, so I'll simply curl my lashes before applying my Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara. My cheek products vary everyday depending on what I feel like wearing, but I usually go for some sort of nude blush for work and a nice highlighter that's really going to my skin look more luminous and awake. I never used to wear bronzer everyday, but now I feel naked without it! If I'm in a rush, I'll skip this step or I'll reach for my Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow because the 2-in-1 product makes things a little quicker in the mornings. I love the warmth and glow bronzer gives to the skin, and I also like a polished complexion for a 'no makeup makeup' look. For lips, a nude lip colour is my go-to for work, but on a fuss-free morning, it's always either the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Honey or the Dior Addict Lip Glow because they're both a lip balm and lip colour in one. As I'm still eating half a crumpet as I head out the door, I'll usually apply my lip product on the tram or wait until I've reached work.
6. Snack time! What's in the bowl?
I'm not going to lie, I'm a sucker for chips and chocolate! I do try to limit them to 'sometimes food' though. As a healthier alternative, I snack on fruit and at the moment, I'm enjoying bananas and that mandarins are back in season. When I'm feeling the savoury, the Vege Chips Turmeric & Cheese Crisps have been a recent love of mine. They're found in the health food aisle of supermarkets, though I'm not exactly sure how much healthier they are. Either way, they're delicious! If you want to offer me some healthy snack suggestions, please do! If I'm at home enjoying a cuppa in the afternoon, I'll occasionally treat myself to Tim Tams. There is nothing in this world that is more satisfying than a Tim Tam Slam.
7. What is your evening beauty routine?
The first step in my evening beauty routine is removing my eye makeup with Bioderma. At the moment, I'm using the Bioderma White Objective H20 micellar water, which is meant to correct pigmentation, but truthfully, I haven't noticed much of a difference. After that, I then hop into the shower where I double cleanse, body wash, floss and brush my teeth (some people may consider this gross, but I don't care!). I'll also wash my hair and shave, if need be. I prefer to shower at night as it relaxes me and I love feeling fresh and clean before bed. Plus, the more time I get to stay in bed in the mornings, the better! When I get out of the shower, I'll then go on to apply my body moisturiser and do the rest of my skincare routine - this time opting for an exfoliating toner and a heavier treatment and moisturiser. For my evening treatment products, I'm currently alternating between Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair and the NUDE ProGenius Treatment Oil, which is my go-to oil come wintertime, and if I'm lazy, I'll simply cleanse and apply Alpha-H Liquid Gold as an overnight treatment. On the nights I feel my skin needs a little TLC, I'll use a physical exfoliator (but use a more gentle toner in conjunction) and either do a facial massage or apply a face mask for ten minutes or so. I'm always switching things up in the evenings depending on how my skin is looking or how motivated I'm feeling!
8. How do you wind down and prep for bed?
The first thing I do to wind down and prep for bed is my evening beauty routine. It's only when my makeup's off, I'm showered and in my pyjamas that I feel like I can truly relax. Oh, and also make my work lunch and do the dishes! I like to prepare my work lunch the night before to save time in the mornings, and as mess and untidiness can stress me out, I make sure the sink is clean and everything in my room is in its right place. Once everything is neat and tidy, I'll make myself a cuppa and hop into bed with my electric blanket turned on (at least now during winter, anyway) and sometimes light a candle if there's enough time before going to sleep to let it burn evenly. You have to think about these things, you know! I don't do anything spiritual~ before I go to bed - I've never tried yoga or meditation before I sleep - I'll either watch something on my laptop whether it be a TV show, film or YouTube. YouTube weirdly puts me to sleep and I will always fall asleep watching a YouTube video! I really enjoy reading Harry Potter before I go to bed too; that's always comforting and relaxing.
9. Cozy up! What are you wearing to sleep?
I like to wear some sort of tank top or baggy tee with loose bottoms to bed. Obviously, in the summer, I'll be wearing shorts and in winter, pants, but I never ever wear jumpers or socks to bed, no matter how cold it is! My mum thinks I'm crazy, but I just can't stand the feeling of them. I'm not into sleeping naked (is that TMI?!), but I do like to feel as free as possible! My favourite pyjama clothing is all from Peter Alexander as they do really cute designs and I've noticed such a difference in quality since I stopped buying from Cotton On. I didn't understand the hype around Peter Alexander at first, but their pyjamas wash better and feel a hell of a lot softer and warmer.
10. What are some things you must do before hitting the hay?
When I'm ready to hit the hay, I'll put my phone on charge and set my alarm. I like to triple check that it's definitely on and set properly as there has been an incident where I've set it to PM and I've slept in the next morning! Not my finest moment. I'll then go on to apply some lip balm and my hand cream, all before I'm ready to turn out the lights!
What does your morning and evening routine look like?
