A Desk Tour
My desk is a space where I come to both work and relax. I can sit here for hours on end editing photos and typing up blog posts, yet I can also sit back with a cuppa, enjoying an episode or two of television or even some blog reading. I have to admit though, sometimes I'll end up retreating to my bed when it gets cold because as winter is fast approaching now, I can actually be a lot more productive all cosy in bed with my electric blanket turned on! After showing you all my bedside table, I'm here to take you around my desk, which resides on the opposite side. It's a corner of my room that brings me a lot of joy as it's where the blogging magic takes place and nothing makes me feel more happy and productive than when I'm blogging.
My desk is the IKEA Micke Desk. It's small, but it's the perfect size for my room and for my needs. Eventually, when I buy my own place, I'd love to get the IKEA Liatorp Desk and house a beautiful iMac on top of it! Unlike most people here who seem to love rearranging things in their home, I tend to stick with what I have, so everything in my room, including my desk, tends to stay the same. If I buy new homewares, I'll change things up and sometimes I'll buy flowers for my desk, but this is what it looks like on an everyday basis.
Seeing as my desk space is small, I try to keep it as minimal and clutter-free as possible, but I'm also partial to little trinkets and decorative pieces for some personality. I think a tidy desk equals a tidy mind and can also increase productivity, but I wouldn't want anything too plain Jane either! The most prominent thing on my desk is of course, my baby, my everything, my MacBook Pro. I'd be lost without it! My desktop wallpaper is one of Claude Monet's Impressionist paintings from his Water Lilies series. I absolutely adore Monet and this has been my wallpaper ever since I saw an exhibition of his work back in 2013. I don't have the heart to change it, and I don't know what I'd change it to even if I wanted to because this one is far too beautiful.
To the left of my desk, I cleaned out an empty Ladurée candle jar to house my pens, scissors and Muji correction tape. My pen collection is made up of Uni-Ball gel pens, Kikki K ballpoints, Muji Gel Ink Pens and Sharpies because not only do they look the prettiest, but they're the most enjoyable to write with. I love a good pen that keeps my handwriting looking neat! Diptyque's Baies Room Spray smells just heavenly and the scent is particularly uplifting when trying to be productive. It lasts forever and you only need a tiny amount too - it's one of my all-time favourite Diptyque fragrances. When my hands or lips are feeling dry, I'll reach for my Byredo La Tulipe Hand Cream and Glossier Balm Dotcom. I don't keep any other beauty products on my desk because I know I'd never use them and it's just not really necessary either. I also have a little silver cat trinket from Myer because cats. I love them.
Also to the left of my desk are my two Moleskine notebooks. I have a black one, which is my diary and a white one, which is my blogging notebook where I jot down my blog post ideas, products I need to photograph, etc. I own a lot of notebooks (I'm a sucker for those Rifle Paper Co. ones!), but these two are the ones I use the most, so I keep them on top of my desk rather than inside the drawer. Moleskine is also my favourite brand of notebook to use. The paper just feels so luxurious to write on and I enjoy their sleek, minimal design. Those decked out life planners with stickers and shit are a bloody waste of time, if you ask me. My iPhone 6s rarely ever leaves my side, so if I'm at my desk, so is my phone, although sometimes when I'm working, I'll keep it away from me to prevent distractions!
To the right of my desk, I have a motivational quote, a succulent and Polaroid of myself and my good friend, Jennifer. The quote is by Pablo Picasso (can you tell I love art?) in the handwriting of the talented Jasmine Dowling. I was lucky enough to get this personally written for me when she was taking requests! As for the frame, it's just from good old IKEA. My cute succulent pot is from Melbourne-based brand, Pop Plant. It can be so much fun sourcing local, handmade gems and I love the whole pastel colour scheme I've got going on here on my desk. When my succulent dies (because they always do!), I'll put a Diptyque candle in its place until I buy a new succulent. I've probably bought about three or four of them now because I'm never able to keep them alive! I don't always burn candles at my desk, but when I do, I find it so comforting and cosy to write blog posts in the late afternoons with one going. My Polaroid of Jennifer and I is framed in a beautiful marble one from Country Road. Jen is one of my nearest and dearest friends and I love this silly photo of us together!
Further down on the right hand side is my Apple Magic Mouse and white mousepad, which is just from eBay. I've gotten used to using a trackpad over the years, but I still prefer to use a mouse, especially when editing photos.
The inside my desk drawer is mostly comprised of important documents, electronics and stationery such as my Kikki K and Rifle Paper Co. notebooks. My important documents are stored in a white A4 folder and on top of that sits my Muji to do list for ease of reach. Some of my electronics include my battery chargers (for AA batteries and my camera), Apple USB SuperDrive, my portable speaker charger and my portable hard drives, one of which I decorated with Glossier stickers! I finally found a use for them! I've also got my Ray-Ban glasses (I'm short-sighted) and in my La Belle Miette macaron boxes (more pastel!), I keep smaller electronic and stationery bits like USBs, earphones, memory cards, cables, glue tape, a measuring tape, stapler, pen refills, etc. If you need it, I've got it!
When I've got my cup of tea, I sit it on top my octagonal marble coaster from Lily and the Weasel. I go through phases with my mugs I like to drink from and at the moment, I can't get enough of my VÄNSKAP mug from Kikki K. It's just adorable and as you know, I'm obsessed with cats! Behind my MacBook is my Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II in Pearl, which is my favourite way to listen to my music. My friends have always recommended Bose to me and having used their earphones in the past, I knew they were the brand to go for when I was deciding on a mini speaker. The sound is incredible!
My desk chair is a replica of the Eames DSR Side Chair from Matt Blatt. It's comfortable enough, though I have a white faux fur cushion from H&M on it for added comfort! I hate the bulkiness of more traditional desk chairs, but I'll probably get one when I eventually have more space to work with. The poster above my desk is called Map and Birds by Judy Kaufmann, which I got from Issue 42 of Frankie magazine, but if you like, you can buy it independently here. I love to travel and I also love that it fits in nicely with my pastel theme!
