The Internet is a weird and wonderful place to meet people when those that we know in "real life" don't quite share the same hobbies and interests as us. I often find it quite amusing to compare my stash of beauty products to that of my family and friends' because I'm always met with reactions like, "Oh my God!" and "Do you really need all of those blushes?". I know you guys get me though and my sister is someone I know in real life who is actually starting to get me now too. Up until about two years ago, she didn't wear a single ounce of makeup, but with the influence of me and the online beauty community, she's definitely built up a stash of her own to almost rival mine! When she flew from Perth to come visit me for a week (the reason for my short blogging absence - apologies for that!), I thought it'd be fun to put together a post on her favourite products. You may already notice it doesn't look all that dissimilar from mine, but what can I say? I just have really great taste.
My sister's name is Kymberley (Kym for short, but affectionately known as Wiz by my brother and I) and she's a year younger than me. She's into reading (her favourite book is Little Women and I bought her the beautiful Rifle Paper Co. edition for her birthday last year like the good sister I am!), period dramas, Game of Thrones and just like yours truly, has excellent taste in music and beauty products. Unlike me, however, she doesn't completely turn her nose up at drugstore brands (I have no qualms admitting I'm a bit of a snob!) and her favourite base product is the Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream Foundation, preferring a lighter coverage complexion. She bought this off of Lisa Eldridge's recommendation, proving that even those who aren't fully-fledged beauty aficionados like us simply adore Lisa Eldridge too.
Another area we differ in is with cream blushes. While, I, myself find them to be too much of a faff to apply, Kym loves the way they look on the skin. Her go-to blushes are the Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm in Roly Poly Rosy, which she discovered through Estée Lalonde's blog (but she will always be Essie Button!) and NARS' The Multiple in Orgasm, which was bought on a whim after hearing good things. The NARS Blush in Orgasm was one of the very first I bought when I had just gotten into high end makeup all those years ago myself. A new one Kym recently picked up is the Stila Convertible Colour in Peony. During a day out shopping in the city, it was a toss up between this and Lillium, but we both agreed Peony was the prettier shade of the two.
My sister has developed a bit of thing for highlighters and we both prefer a more dewy complexion to the skin. One of the very first she bought was the Topshop Glow Highlighter in Polish, which is a beautiful white gold shade with the most stunning pink duochrome running through it. I'll definitely be borrowing this one again when I'm home next! I also tried out her Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminiser and while it pumps out way too much for one full face's use, the hassle of unscrewing the pump for less wastage is worth it for this lovely champagne hue. It also contains an array of ingredients good for the skin. Unlike me, my sister fell for the hype over the supremely sought-after BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop. This is one I didn't get (I don't watch Jaclyn Hill and after swatching it in Sephora, I found it a bit too yellow-toned for my liking), though Kym couldn't help herself when it came to the limited edition product. Don't get me wrong, it is really pretty, just not one I'd part my money with. During a peruse around Sephora last week, she also fell for the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone. I'd say my sister is set for highlighters for the time being, but who am I to talk?!
While I was home for the holidays, my sister tried out my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and when she asked me the name of the product, she cracked up laughing (she gets her nickname from being a huge Harry Potter fan). It was fitting she ended up loving this product so much and buying it for herself! When it comes to lips, my sister and I share the same love for the pinky nude shades, two of her favourites being the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita, which she wears almost everyday, and the Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Serenity.
Kym has only just recently started getting into skincare and picked up a few things from Priceline when I reminded her of the 40% off skincare sale not too long ago. Wanting a brightening serum, she bought the Antipodes Apostle Skin Brightening & Tone Correcting Serum in-store after seeing it sold out online, thinking it must be good. After borrowing hers when she came to stay with me, I have to say, I much prefer it over my Antipodes Worship Superfruit Antioxidant Serum and will be copying her when mine runs out! She also read good reviews of the Antipodes Kiwi Seed Oil Eye Cream and loves the Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse as her body moisturiser of choice. Kym and I both adore the smell of this multi-purpose oil and she's converted to this from coconut oil as she found the latter to be too greasy.
Like most of us beauty lovers, my sister also has a soft spot for Jo Malone. She has the Cologne in Wild Bluebell, which she bought during her first stay with me in Melbourne this time last year. One day, I'd love to take her to get a Jo Malone hand massage and treat her to her second bottle as she's done so much for me. I knew she'd love the Elizabeth and James Nirvana White EDP, so when I told her to smell my rollerball when I was back in Perth last, she ended up buying it for herself during her visit to Melbourne. She definitely has a penchant for the fresh and floral fragrances.
Since Kym's recent interest in beauty, it's been fun borrowing each other's products and seeing what we have in common and even what we don't. I feel like this is something sisters establish during their teen years, but your late twenties while living in different states isn't a bad time to start either! Our parents joke that Kym is becoming as bad as I am, but that just means I'm correctly fulfilling my duty as an older sibling.
Do you have a sister who shares your love of beauty products?
