Hey, I'm Tenneil

I live in Perth, Australia, and this is my creative outlet where I blog about beauty, my life and everything in between. I enjoy the '80s, the '90s and anything French, and some of my favourite things in life include music,  film, summer and a nice cup of tea.

What I Got for My Birthday

What I Got for My Birthday

The prospect of turning another year older is never something I look forward to anymore. My dad's birthday is the day before mine and when I was little, I never used to understand why he didn't get as excited as I did... until now, that is! Being in my late twenties, I almost kind of get offended when I hear people in their early twenties talk about how old they're getting. Just you wait, my friend. It's about to get a whole lot worse!

I guess I really can't complain though. I'm grateful for all that I have in my life; I'm healthy, I have a roof over my head and I have wonderful family and friends to celebrate my birthday with. And by celebrating, I mean eating, of course. I had an amazing dim sum lunch with my family and in the evening, we enjoyed cocktails and steak at Sen5es. My best friend, April, came along too and after spending a year galavanting through Europe, it was so lovely to be reunited with her. During my time home in Perth, my friend Anna treated me to another dim sum lunch at Dragon Palace (it's our tradition!) and I also caught up with my high school friends at Little Bird Cafe for brunch. I really only see these girls maybe once or twice a year now, but whenever I do, it's like no time has passed at all and we just pick up right where we left off. If birthdays mean eating good food with good people, I guess they aren't so bad!

Presents are a great thing about birthdays too. I love treating myself (but when am I not?!) and I was a little bit spoiled by my family and friends this year. I'm not sure what people think about these sorts of posts, but I love them because I'm nosy like that.

When my bloggy BFF, Jennifer, came over to my house carrying a Jo Malone bag, I thought it was just a gift in a Jo Malone bag, not actual Jo Malone! I could not believe this girl. Owning a Jo Malone candle was something I was going to reserve for when I owned my own home, but Jennifer went ahead and got me one, and in my favourite Jo Malone scent, no less; Peony & Blush Suede. It's absolutely beautiful and now that I've taken these photos, I can go ahead and take off the cute little bow on top. I really want to get those black Jo Malone matchsticks, but they aren't available in Australia. I'm devastated!

Jennifer also gifted me the Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Mink Brule and even though I never even would have considered buying a Tom Ford nail polish for myself, I'm so glad I own one now. It's a stunning nude pink shade, very similar to OPI's Barefoot in Barcelona and it's what I painted my nails with for my actual birthday. I wore it for a whole week without chipping and when my nails started to grow out, my friend thought I'd had Shellac done! You really do get what you pay for with Tom Ford.

As if that wasn't enough, Jennifer also treated me to a trip to the newly opened Cat Cafe Purrth, lunch at Architecture and Heroes and then also bought me a Cat Cafe Purrth mug without me knowing. More than anything though, it was just so nice to spend the whole day together, chilling out at my place with endless conversations.

My best friend gave me a $40 Myer gift card (she knows I'm always spending my money there!) and with that, I got myself the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Eyeshadow Palette, which has been on my wishlist for quite some time. I'm always wearing brown eyeshadow and I love how sleek and compact this is. I also bought the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita with the $20 my nanna's sweet friend gave me. She has two young granddaughters who are starting to get into makeup, so I'm constantly giving away my unloved products to her! I'd had Dolce Vita on my wishlist ever since I saw my sister wearing it earlier in the year and now she's got me wanting Walkyrie too! My nanna also gave me birthday money, but I used that cash to get myself a taxi from the airport to my house, groceries, pay off my credit card and to top up my Myki card when I arrived back in Melbourne. As for my dad, he surprised me and paid for my driver's licence renewal for the next five years (I've got a Western Australian driver's licence, so all my mail goes to my parents' house), which he said was his birthday present to me (he's always been very pragmatic like that!). Isn't adulting fun?

My mum's present to me was much more exciting though. We took a little trip to Mecca Cosmetica and she treated me to the Diptyque Philosykos EDT, which had been on my wishlist for over two years, I think! I never understood the hype around Philosykos nor the Figuier candle at first; I was definitely more of a Roses and Baies person, but the more I smelt it, the more it grew on me and I think back then, I was still used to your more standard department store fragrances, as opposed to luxury niche brands. I'm so glad I finally have this in my life; it's so crisp and fresh-smelling and it's become my go-to spring scent this season.

My friend Holly got me these cute little Cirkus Charm earrings that I forgot to photograph and from Country Road, I received a $20 birthday voucher, which is so nice considering I only buy maybe one or two things from there each year! With it, I got myself the Loft Marble Tray and I'm currently using it to hold a few of my perfumes. I'm definitely still not over the marble trend! Sephora also sent me a birthday voucher, but the terms and conditions to using it were just ridiculous. To use your $10 birthday voucher, you can only use it online and you have to spend over $90! Is that not the dumbest thing you've ever heard of? I mean, there are a few things I want to get from Sephora, but I just couldn't afford to spend that much money in one go, especially when I had already splurged on my birthday present to myself.

I definitely went all out with my birthday present to myself! I treated myself to the Bose QuietComfort35 Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones, with my $20 Myer One birthday voucher to help soften the blow to my bank account, even if just a little bit! The sound is outstanding and now when I'm travelling to and from Perth, I can watch movies and listen to music without the awful aeroplane sound muffling everything. They're great for general home use too. Super comfortable and sleek, they've been so worth the investment. I'm utterly in love!
