Slip, Slop, Slap
With temperatures soaring as high as 46 degrees, it's safe to say that summer is in full swing here in Australia. Protecting your skin from the sun is important no matter where you live and no matter what season, but us Australians have to be particularly more careful where those harsh UV rays are their most damaging. I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers being told to "slip, slop, slap" or "no hat, no play" in primary school! I'm not much of a hat wearer, but the importance of SPF has stuck with me, so today I am bringing you my favourite sunscreens for both face and body, as well as my favourite SPF-containing light coverage bases that won't leave your face melting away in the heat.
My go-to sunscreen for the face is the Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 30+ Facial Sunscreen. I've been using this for a good few years now after it was recommended to me by a lovely sales assistant, and with a weightless, easy-to-blend formula, this applies like a dream. I've found that some facial sunscreens can be quite hard to blend into the skin and even leave a white cast, but this one just feels like a regular moisturiser and I can't ever imagine myself straying away from this. While To Save Face may only have an SPF of 30, it's important to understand that SPF works differently in Australia (thanks for the heads up, Katrina and Jennifer!) due to just how harsh those rays are here, but don't worry, you're still getting the same protection as anything that's 50 and over from your international brands. Not only does this sunscreen have UVA and UVB protection, but it also contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, pomegranate extract and vitamin E, making it a real treat for your skin.
Once I've applied my face sunscreen, it's time to pick my base. A lot of foundations and tinted moisturisers contain SPF themselves, though I wouldn't ever rely on that alone to protect my skin. With an SPF of 19, the YSL Le Teint Touché Éclat Foundation is a lovely base for the summer as it's super lightweight and provides the skin with a youthful summertime glow. It's not the highest coverage, but who really wants to be caking themselves with foundation in this mad heat?! If you're after something that's going to hide those pesky blemishes a bit better, there's Chanel Vitalumière Aqua. Granted I can only speak for myself as I don't have the worst skin the world, you can definitely build it up to a medium coverage. If you're not sensitive to fragranced products, this foundation smells just heavenly, while also blending beautifully into the skin and containing an SPF of 15. If you really don't like the feel of anything on your skin during the summer, I recommend the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser. With broad spectrum SPF 30, this is absolutely weightless and the skin glows from within. The staying power is surprisingly good for such a light coverage base (though I do wear primer underneath) and if you need a bit more, you can always pop on a bit of concealer. Another tinted moisturiser I have used and loved in the past is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser. It has an SPF of 20 and I really need to pick up another tube of this!
I'm a little naughty and forget to use body sunscreen a lot of the time, but I've since rectified that as I recently purchased the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Spray SPF 50+. A lot of thick and creamy sunscreens can leave the skin feeling gross and sticky upon application, but this lovely sunscreen has quite a liquid consistency, making it really easy to blend in and leaves no white casts whatsoever. It still has that weird sunscreen smell, which I'm really not a fan of, but it's a small price to pay to protect myself against skin cancer! All the more, it has broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, is two hours water resistant and conveniently housed in a spray bottle, making application fuss free.
Now you're all good to go have fun in the sun!... Or if you're anything like me, stay indoors all day with the air conditioner on full blast.
