Hey, I'm Tenneil

I live in Perth, Australia, and this is my creative outlet where I blog about beauty, my life and everything in between. I enjoy the '80s, the '90s and anything French, and some of my favourite things in life include music,  film, summer and a nice cup of tea.

Short Hair, Don't Care

Short Hair, Don't Care

Watching season 5 of Mad Men and seeing Megan's beautiful hair was what inspired me to cut my hair short last year. I was also travelling through Europe during the summer and not being in the comfort of my home and all my products, I wanted something that was easy to maintain in the hot European heat. I guess for a lot girls, they take pride in their long luscious locks and have this fear when it's time to cut off those split ends, but for me, I let my hairdresser go wild with the scissors.

Since last year, I've had a few more cuts, but this time, I decided to go even shorter. I always like to get my hair done for my birthday and as I was in Sydney, I asked some friends to recommend me a good hairdressing salon to go to. Prema ranked the highest amongst those recommended to me, so it seemed like the way to go, and it ended up being one of the best hairdressing experiences I've ever had. Not only did my hair colourist and stylist actually listen and acknowledge what I wanted done, but they gave their own suggestions too. Always willing to try something new, I listened to them too and really loved the way my hair turned out. Seeing as though I can't do anything too crazy with my hair (I'd love to get lilac in my hair, but when you've got thick, dark coarse hair, it doesn't seem like the wisest idea), I always get my standard red highlights, a few layers and some thinning out. My hair colourist suggested bringing my highlights down from the roots creating an - cue the overused term - ombré effect and my stylist totally hacked into my hair to thin it out. She even commented that she could be here forever thinning it out! While most girls are desperately trying to add thickness and volume to their hair, I am forever trying to get rid of it! I do use a few volumising products in my roots though as flat hair on top with a lot of body on the bottom just looks odd.

As much as I love all things beauty, I suppose you could say I'm a true lazy girl at heart. Due to my thick hair, I only need to wash it once or twice a week and even then, it's still always such a chore. I'll do anything to make the whole ordeal easier, so having short hair is the best option for me. I love that it takes me five minutes to style and I don't get chunks of it falling out anymore. It still weirds me out a little washing like, no hair in the shower, but it's not such a dreaded task anymore.

There are a couple of things I miss about long hair, however. I have more of my natural curl when my hair is longer and because my hair is thick, I can't wear my hair in a ponytail without it looking like a puff ball. The positives of having short hair totally outweigh the negatives though as I can always add curl back in with my GHD and instead of ponytails, I go for the bun. If you've been contemplating cutting your hair short, I suggest going for it because change is a good thing and it does grow back! Having short hair feels really refreshing and though I guess we all have our standards of beauty that appeal to us, I can definitely see myself rocking the short hair for a good while.
