I've been dying to do a skincare routine for ages, but there was always something missing and wasn't 100% happy with it until now. I'm a bit of a skincare junkie and love trying out new products! Once I find something I absolutely adore, I stick to it though and I now definitely don't see my skincare routine changing any time soon.
I'd say my skin type is combination/normal. For the most part, it's neither oily or dry, but sometimes I'll get oily on my t-zone areas. Just to give you a brief history of my skin, from about the ages of 17 to 22, I suffered from pretty bad acne and tried every anti-blemish treatment on the market. The worst ones were probably Clinique, which really did nothing and is just full of alcohol, and Proactive, which not only severely dried out my skin, but would leave it feeling sore, itchy and red, and my eyes so puffy, I could barely open them. After years of putting up with horrible skin, my best friend recommended I try going on the pill and I haven't looked back! That combined with discovering Liz Earle products, my skin has changed dramatically over the past year and I've never felt this happy or confident in my own skin. While all these products work wonders for me, I think a lot has to do with the pill, which has helped balance my hormones. You have to help inside your body before you deal with out!
In the mornings, there isn't too much I need to do because not only is my skin still relatively clean from the previous night's routine, but I'm always in a rush! Now that I've had my acne under control for about a year now, I don't feel the need to use acne/blemish targeted cleansers. Instead, I use Avène Gentle Gel Cleanser, which I just love. I absolutely adore French skincare and this cleanser is so fresh and light. I usually change up my cleansers every time one runs out, but I can see myself repurchasing this.
I tone with either Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic or Caudalie Beauty Elixir depending on my mood. I love the Instant Boost Skin Tonic because it contains no alcohol, so it doesn't strip the skin, and instead just feels refreshed and smelling lovely. The Beauty Elixir is even more refreshing with its powerful natural fragrance containing ingredients like grape, orange blossom, rose, balm mint and rosemary. At first, I didn't get the hype over this product and thought it smelt weird, but it grew on me so quickly and now I'm addicted! It feels so luxurious to spray this on the skin.
I then proceed to a serum and my choice is Estée Lauder Idealist Pore Minimising Skin Refinisher. I don't have big pores, but as I'm in love with Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, I thought I'd give this a go and it's a really nice product to use. I finish off with a moisturiser, which is Liz Earle Skin Repair Light Moisturiser or if I'm going to be out all day, Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 30+ Hydrating Facial Sunscreen. I love the Liz Earle moisturiser and Mecca Cosmetica sunscreen because they aren't at all greasy. They feel lovely on the skin and are a perfect base before makeup. Lastly, I apply Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to brighten my eyes for the day. This eye cream gives the slightest sheen under the eyes and is perfect for daytime use.
In the evenings, things get a little advanced and there are a whole lot of products I have on rotation! If I'm wearing make up, I'll remove my eye make up by soaking cotton pads with cult favourite, Bioderma Créaline H20 Solution, and proceed with Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser to remove my face makeup. Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser is a holy grail product of mine and just recently, I decided to try out the limited edition rose and lavender version. There's nothing different about it besides the gorgeous floral smell and I love my skincare products smelling natural. I remove the cleanser with the Liz Earle muslin cloths, but I'm sure any muslin cloth will do. If I'm craving a luxurious cleanse and want to give my skin a treat, I'll cleanse with the Emma Hardie Amazing Face Natural Lift and Sculpt Moringa Cleansing Balm. Mixed with a few drops of warm water, this product feels absolutely gorgeous on the skin and will leave it feeling silky and supple. Either using Liz Earle or Emma Hardie, I'll then do a double cleanse with Avène Gentle Gel Cleanser just to make sure every trace of makeup has been removed.
On alternate days, I use Alpha-H Liquid Gold, which is a chemical exfoliant containing glycolic acid. It resurfaces the skin, making it much brighter and uneven skin tone less visible. When I break out, my blemishes tend to leave me with horrible scars, but this product works a treat in helping to deal with hyper pigmentation. I leave this on the skin and apply nothing else afterwards, so the product can take full effect. Every other day, I'll use my trusty Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic or Caudalie Beauty Elixir.
Once a week, I'll use a more abrasive exfoliator or mask. My exfoliators of choice are NuBo Diamond Peel & Reveal Exfoliator and Activator and Emma Hardie Amazing Face Rosehip Exfoliating Seeds. With Diamond Peel & Reveal, you apply step 1 first, the exfoliator, which contains little diamond particles in it to brighten the skin. After a couple of minutes, you apply step 2, the activator, on top and wash it off after rubbing both products in together on the skin. This product is really nice and effective, though probably not enough for me to repurchase it again. Plus, the two step thing gets annoying at times. As for my Emma Hardie Exfoliating Seeds, these are applied on top of the Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm, rubbed in circular motions over the skin and then removed with the Emma Hardie Amazing Face Natural Lift and Sculpt Dual Action Professional Cleansing Cloth. One side of the cloth is muslin to exfoliate and the other is micro fibre to polish. The Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm can be used as a hydrating mask, but I mainly stick to REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask or my little free sample of Liz Earle Deep Cleansing Mask. The REN mask works absolute wonders to help brighten my complexion, smells delightfully fruity and has the texture of jam. The Liz Earle Deep Cleansing Mask is a pretty standard one that doesn't really do anything special, but is still lovely to use if your face is feeling a little oily or congested.
After using any of these products, I'll then tone and use a serum. I either use Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair or Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate depending on my mood. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair works amazingly to even out skin tone and fade scars - I can't be without it! This stuff is like liquid gold to me. Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate plumps and smooths the skin and with the gorgeous herbal smell, on really tired nights, I like to rub this into my hands, cuff them and then take in the scent. It's calming, soothing and relaxing, which makes it perfect just before bedtime. Next is moisturiser and I either use my Liz Earle Skin Repair Light Moisturiser or if my skin is feeling a little tight, Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré. This product is so thick, rich and creamy, I love it! It leaves the skin feeling so supple, smooth and hydrated, though I only like to use it at night time as it's a little too heavy for me during the day. My night eye cream of choice is Caudalie Pulpe Vitaminée Eye and Lip Cream, which reduces the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles (not that I have any, but it's better to start taking care earlier than later!), lightens dark circles and decongests puffiness - everything you could ask for in an eye cream! After using the Beauty Elixir, I was eager to try out more products by Caudalie. They're an amazing French skincare brand and I love that this product can be used on the lips too.
Lastly, if I have blemishes, I'll finish off with Peter Thomas Roth Acne Spot and Area Treatment. This product dries out blemishes so fast without drying the rest of the skin, and it's been such a lifesaver when I suffered from bad acne. The smell of sulphur is pretty awful, but you get use to it and it's worth it for the product benefits!
Ever since I completely changed my skincare routine last year, my skin has done a complete turn around and I've never been happier. I get a lot of compliments on my skin these days, people asking what foundation I use or even people commenting noticing the change and it feels really great - especially considering how much time, research and money I've invested into it! One day I'd like to invest in a Clarisonic, but it's not really something that's on my mind a lot for now. My skin will never be the same as it once was when I was 16, but it's pretty damn close and I'll continue using these products for a long, long time! Or of course, until I watch another YouTube video or read another blog post on the latest skincare craze. My apologies this was so long!
